Kitchen garden

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program was successfully introduced into our school's curriculum this year.  The program embodies the vision of Australia's renown chef and author Stephanie Alexander "to develop life-long healthier and happier eating habits in a new generation of Australians by engaging them in growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing delicious and healthy food at primary school".

A productive vegetable and herb garden was established and equipped thanks to a Working Bee, ongoing P&C fund-raising and donations from the school community and local landscaping businesses.  As well as growing and tasting a range of vegetables and herbs, students have been actively involved in tasks that observe sustainability principles.  Our school has become a Waterwise accredited school, has a fully-functioning worm farm and has implemented a whole-school program whereby food scraps are collected to turn into compost.

Fundraising from the P&C was also used to purchase kitchen utensils, equipment and appliances.  The school is currently in the process of designing and installing a kitchen space to be used by staff and students in 2015, enabling skills-based learning that extends across the entire school curriculum.
